Chapter 3 draws our attention to the relationship between communication and our identity. There are many facets involved in how we view ourselves internally and how we present ourselves externally to the world. For this assignment, let’s apply concepts from chapter 3 to our own lives in such a way that we can hopefully understand a little bit more about the processes involved in self-concept management in hopes that we can bring more awareness to our language and behavior.

Answers to the following questions should guide our discussion. Choose 2 of the four options to discuss.

Briefly explain the two types of self-fulfilling prophecies. Explain how one or both types have affected your life (or someone close to you) in both positive and negative ways.

We see examples of this premise that language can be used to change one’s own self image in sports psychology, religious chanting practices found across different spiritual world views, and personal development books. The assumption is that language can change one’s own self image, and even ultimately behavior.

According to our text, “manner,” “appearance,” and “setting” are all choices we make day-to-day during face-to-face communication while doing impression management. Sociologist Erving Goffman suggested we each take on the role of a playwright who creates identities that reflect how we want others to see us. Take this opportunity to be slightly melodramatic and identify at least 5 “roles” that you present each day and give a little insight about each of these. A few examples might be “party animal,” or “wise older sibling,” or “competent female manager,” etc.

Apply the concept of social penetration and Jarahi Window models regarding self-disclosing communication to one relationship in your life. Use what you learned from the text to describe.
